Explainer: the government’s Immigration White Paper
Yesterday the Government released its long-awaited Immigration White Paper. It focuses on ‘legal migration’, meaning people who come to the UK to work, study, and for some other reasons including family. Within an hour of the White Paper being published we had people calling and emailing us at GMIAU worried about what the changes might mean for them, their families or people they support. Along with the policy change was some really toxic rhetoric from the Prime Minister, echoing the narrative of the far right.
There’s lots we still don’t know, but we have published an initial explainer of what we understand of the proposals so far, and what we think about them. It’s not a comprehensive run through of all parts of the White Paper – we have focused on areas where we most work with people in Greater Manchester. You can read the whole White Paper here.
-
Increased English language requirements for people coming to the UK on a visa or as dependants
-
Longer periods of time in the UK before people can settle and apply for citizenship so that it becomes “the norm” for people to be on a ten-year route to settlement
-
A ban on people applying to come to the UK as care workers
